...That's what Governor Paterson said about the shootings today. For those who don't know, there was a hostage situation and shooting in downtown Binghamton, NY today. This is the biggest city in my area - less than 30 minutes from my home.
Things like this just don't happen here! We are a small, safe community. I mean, sure, we've got our fair share of robberies and even the occasional murder (though I wish these never happened), but something of this caliber has never happened here. It breaks my heart, it really does.
What happened was this (according to our Police Chief):
A man, believed to be Jiverly Voong (though they are not 100% sure he was the shooter - he IS among the dead, though), borrowed a friend's car to go down to the American Civic Center to attend a class. This organization helps immigrants become American citizens, and also provides counseling to them.
The shooter parked his car outside the back entrance to the building so that people could not get out. He then went through the front door, and shot the 2 receptionists, killing one. The other played dead, and waited for the shooter to leave. She then called 9-1-1, and police were there within 2 minutes (according to the police chief).
The shooter proceeded down the hallway, and went into a classroom where immigrants were taking their citizenship tests. He killed 12-13 people in that room, and possibly himself.
I just... can't believe this. IN MY HOMETOWN. ;____; It is a grave day indeed.
